I currently concentrate my photographic efforts in North America, in particular, Minnesota. I use the term "nature photographer" to describe myself, rather than the more limiting terms of "wildlife photographer" or "bird photographer." I'm keen to aim my camera at anything "natural." The approach that works best for me is to concentrate my efforts on locations "close to home" where I can become intimately familiar with the local flora and fauna, their annual cycles, and the area's lighting characteristics. A few of my personality characteristics directly impact my photography. I am incredibly determined and persistent (some would say stubborn), some would say anal (though I would prefer the term "perfectionist"), observant and analytical (which comes from spending a lot of time studying birds in the field) and very comfortable with technology.

I currently shoot with a Nikon D300 body. While photographing birds or mammals I used to use a Sigma 50-500mm EX DG HSM f4-6.3 lens. Its sharp, hand-holdable, has fast autofocus, and the ability to zoom is always coming in handy when a subject is cooperative or even for portraits. Recently, however, I purchased a Nikon 300mm f2.8 VR and a Nikon 1.4x teleconverter. This combo has proven to be amazingly sharp and fast. When shooting landscapes I primarily use my AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G VR lens. The VR works great for hand-holding and again the zoom works great for composing the picture I envisioned. Some shots may also have been taken with my AF-S Nikkor-Micro 105mm f2.8 VR. This lens is extremely sharp and works great for macro with its 1:1 focusing ratio.
